Tonight the Vancouver Canucks start their 2009/10 hockey season against the Calgary Flames and I’m not sure the Canucks actually made it for the puck drop at center ice.

The ‘Nucks came out ice cold and on their heels as a much larger looking Flames lineup took it to the early on. Early hits and physical play really prevented the Canucks from any offense. Especially Eric Nystrom on Ryan Johnson who got abso-fucking-lutely rocked.

Things got worse from there as O.B took a stupid elbowing penalty which led to Giordano opening the scoring on the Power Play. That was followed by another PP goal by Rene Bourque and the Canucks were down by 2 not even 1o mins in. It became 3-0 when Flames Defensemen Adam Pardy blasted a screen shot by Luongo who looked shakey.

The Sedin’s were no where to be seen in the first period unless you looked in the penalty box. Newly acquired Flame Jay Bouwmeester looked fluid and intimidating on the blue line in the first covering the right point on the PP. As well Phaneuf rocked Daniel Sedin on a stretch pass to end the period on a clean hit.

As the second period started you knew the Canucks would come out with a different game plan. Well A quick PP goal by Bieksa got them on the board. A great save by Luongo who went east to west to rob Dawes sucked the life life out of the crowd. Unfortunately Brandon Proust made it 4-1 Calgary and the Coach Vigneault started juggling lines. Toward the end of the second Mikael Samuelsson made it 4-2 to bring the boys in blue to within 2.

The 3rd period rolled around and BAM Burrows makes it 4-3. A very greasy and hard working goal considering not 5 seconds earlier he was without a stick. The Canucks continued the pressure and by the halfway point the shots were 10-1 in the 3rd and 37-17 overall by the halfway mark.

Luongo looked solid with a few great glove saves but overall he wasn’t tested at all in the third. In the end though the Canucks with the goalie pulled were sloppy in their own end and gave it up for an empty netter by Phaneuf to make it 5-3 for the Flames in their home opener.

Positives: Fuck! the Canucks were able to over come their sloppy first period and dominate the final two periods. Burrows was instrumental in the Canucks surge and Shirokov looked great.

Negatives: Slow start hurt them and the Sedins were not noticed in the first period.

Final Analysis: The Canucks should have won this game as the Flames were only dominate on the adrenalin of the home opener to start and quickly faded away. If not for Miikka Kiprusoff they would have lost.

First game down!

What a bust. I wonder if there is on out clause by which the Canucks could trade that sieve Luongo.
